What is an Independent GP?
An Independent GP complements your existing GP.
You can book with me for any number of reasons - For example if you are unexpectedly acutely ill, have a chronic condition you'd like to discuss further, would like a referral to a specialist on the NHS or Privately, blood investigations or require a steroid injection. Perhaps you need an appointment at a time that suits you or the waiting times are too long at your practice.
As an Independent GP I can examine, diagnose, prescribe, investigate and refer. In many instances I can do more than your NHS GP.
Q. If I see an Independent GP, will it affect my NHS registration?
A. No, you are free to move between private and NHS care whenever you choose. You do not have to register with me, simply book an appointment.
Q. Will my Health Insurance pay for an appointment with you?
A. I am unable to accept payment directly from health insurers, but I can issue you a receipt and you may be able to claim the cost back.
Q. Can you access my NHS GP notes?
A. No - I will not be able to access your NHS GP notes. Any new patient will be asked to complete a background history questionnaire giving me as much information as possible about previous medical problems/medication etc. With your permission, I will often be able to access your previous blood results/scan results and specialist letters
Q. Who are you able to see?
A. Like your NHS GP, I can see anyone, of any age. I would ask that anyone under 16 years of age is accompanied by a parent or guardian. My clinic room has two steps up to it; If you have mobility issues I may be able to visit you at your home.
Q. Who will I see at my appointment?
A. You will always see me - Dr Iain McLardy - a GMC Registered Doctor. My aim is to provide individualised care and get to know my patients well. I value continuity.
Q. Do you communicate with my NHS GP?
A. There may be times where it would be beneficial to share things with your NHS GP - for example a new diagnosis or long term treatment. I would only ever share your information with your express consent.
Q. Can you issue a prescription?
A. Yes, I will be able to issue a prescription for you. There will be an administration fee for this. When you present the prescription at the pharmacy, they will charge you for the cost of the drug. I do not have any control over the cost of the medication. I will always aim to prescribe the most cost-effective drug, and can often provide an idea of the price beforehand.
